House 1 of 12

The 1st House

Personality & appearance

The first house is the Lagna itself, the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth, and every other house is counted from it. Its Sanskrit names are tanu bhava, the house of the body, and lagna, the point that is attached. It is the house of the self: the body and its health, the temperament, the appearance and the way a person meets the world. Because the Lagna moves through all twelve signs in a day, a sign about every two hours, it is the most personal point in the chart and the reason an accurate birth time matters. The first house is at once an angle and a trine, the only house that is both, and Parashara counts its lord auspicious for the chart, with one exception in his verses: Venus for a Taurus Lagna. The planets in it colour the whole personality. This page gives what the site's tables hold for the first house: what it signifies, each planet placed in it and its lord in each of the twelve houses.

What the 1st house is

Houses are counted from the Lagna, the sign rising at birth, which is the 1st; in the whole-sign reckoning the birth chart uses, the 1st house is the 1st sign from it. The site's table of significations gives the 1st house as personality & appearance. It is a kendra, one of the four angles (the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th), the pillars of a chart, where a planet acts with force, and a trikona, one of the three trines (the 1st, 5th and 9th), the most fortunate houses. Jupiter and Mercury gain directional strength, dig bala, here: the site's Shadbala counts it at its fullest in this house.

In transit, counted from the Moon sign rather than the Lagna, the classical gochara table the site uses counts the 1st house favourable for the Moon and Venus.

Each planet in the 1st house

The readings the site's birth report gives for each graha placed in the 1st house. Each is one statement about one placement: the sign, the planet's strength and the rest of the chart decide how much of it a life shows.

The Sun. The Sun in the 1st house gives a strong sense of self, leadership and vitality; you carry natural authority and a confident, dignified presence.

The Moon. The Moon in the 1st house makes you sensitive, intuitive and emotionally expressive; your mood shapes your personality and others find you approachable.

Mars. Mars in the 1st house gives a bold, energetic and assertive nature with physical strength; you are driven and competitive but must temper impulsiveness.

Mercury. Mercury in the 1st house gives a quick, intelligent and youthful nature; you are witty, communicative and skilled with words, logic and analysis.

Jupiter. Jupiter in the 1st house grants wisdom, optimism and a generous, ethical nature; you are respected, fortunate and naturally guiding to others.

Venus. Venus in the 1st house gives charm, beauty and a pleasant, refined nature; you are attractive, artistic, diplomatic and fond of comfort and harmony.

Saturn. Saturn in the 1st house gives a serious, disciplined and responsible nature; maturity, struggle and patience shape you, with strength rising in later life.

Rahu. Rahu in the 1st house gives intense ambition, an unconventional persona and a magnetic, sometimes restless presence; identity is sought through bold reinvention.

Ketu. Ketu in the 1st house gives a detached, introspective and self-questioning nature; you appear enigmatic and are drawn inward towards spiritual identity.

The lord of the 1st in each house

The lord of a house is the lord of the sign on it, so it changes with the Lagna. Wherever that lord stands, it links the 1st house's matters to that house. The birth report reads it so:

In the 1st. The lord of the 1st house placed in the 1st (its own house) links self and body strongly here — it strengthens your health, vitality and self-made identity.

In the 2nd. The lord of the 1st house placed in the 2nd links self and body with wealth, family and speech — it directs your drive towards earning wealth and supporting family.

In the 3rd. The lord of the 1st house placed in the 3rd links self and body with courage, siblings and communication — it gives self-effort, courage and gains through your own initiative and communication.

In the 4th. The lord of the 1st house placed in the 4th links self and body with home, mother and comfort — it centres your life on home, comfort and emotional security.

In the 5th. The lord of the 1st house placed in the 5th links self and body with children, intellect and romance — it channels your identity into intellect, creativity and children.

In the 6th. The lord of the 1st house placed in the 6th links self and body with health, enemies and service — it turns your energy to overcoming enemies and disease, though health needs care.

In the 7th. The lord of the 1st house placed in the 7th links self and body with marriage and partnership — it binds your identity to partnership, with a strong focus on marriage and others.

In the 8th. The lord of the 1st house placed in the 8th links self and body with longevity, transformation and secrets — it brings a transformative, research-minded life with ups and downs in vitality.

In the 9th. The lord of the 1st house placed in the 9th links self and body with fortune, dharma and father — it blesses you with fortune, dharma and a fortunate, principled self.

In the 10th. The lord of the 1st house placed in the 10th links self and body with career and status — it is excellent — your very identity rises through career, status and public success.

In the 11th. The lord of the 1st house placed in the 11th links self and body with gains and friends — it turns self-effort into steady gains, ambitions and a strong social network.

In the 12th. The lord of the 1st house placed in the 12th links self and body with loss, expense, foreign lands and moksha — it inclines you to foreign lands, seclusion or spirituality, with care needed for vitality and expense.
