The 2nd House
Wealth & finances
The second house is dhana bhava, the house of wealth. Counted from the Lagna, it is the next sign along, and it governs what a person holds: savings and family money, the family itself, speech, food, the face and the early education received at home. It is also counted among the maraka houses, the houses connected with the end of life in the classical texts, though that is a matter for an experienced reading of the whole chart rather than a single placement. The second house is the house of what has been gathered, as the eleventh is of what comes in. The planets in it are said to show in the voice and in what a person values. This page sets out what the site's tables hold for the second house: what it signifies, its class among the houses, the reading of each planet placed in it and the reading of its lord in each of the twelve houses.

What the 2nd house is
Houses are counted from the Lagna, the sign rising at birth, which is the 1st; in the whole-sign reckoning the birth chart uses, the 2nd house is the 2nd sign from it. The site's table of significations gives the 2nd house as wealth & finances. It is none of the angles, trines, houses of difficulty or houses of growth.
In transit, counted from the Moon sign rather than the Lagna, the classical gochara table the site uses counts the 2nd house favourable for Mercury, Jupiter and Venus.
Each planet in the 2nd house
The readings the site's birth report gives for each graha placed in the 2nd house. Each is one statement about one placement: the sign, the planet's strength and the rest of the chart decide how much of it a life shows.
The Sun. The Sun in the 2nd house lends authority to your speech and earnings, often through government, leadership or self-made effort, though pride can colour family matters.
The Moon. The Moon in the 2nd house gives a gentle, persuasive voice and emotional ties to family and wealth; income tends to fluctuate with your moods.
Mars. Mars in the 2nd house brings forceful speech and aggressive earning; you can build wealth through effort, though harsh words may strain family ties.
Mercury. Mercury in the 2nd house grants eloquent speech and a sharp head for money; you earn through communication, commerce, writing or calculation.
Jupiter. Jupiter in the 2nd house blesses wealth, family and wise, truthful speech; you accumulate resources and value knowledge, tradition and good food.
Venus. Venus in the 2nd house blesses wealth, sweet speech and a refined family life; you earn through arts, beauty or luxury and enjoy good food and finery.
Saturn. Saturn in the 2nd house brings measured speech and slow, steady accumulation of wealth; early financial restriction yields to discipline and saving.
Rahu. Rahu in the 2nd house brings unusual or sudden gains in wealth and a persuasive, unconventional voice; family ties and speech may carry foreign influence.
Ketu. Ketu in the 2nd house brings detachment from wealth and family ties and reserved, sometimes blunt speech; material security feels uncertain or unimportant.
The lord of the 2nd in each house
The lord of a house is the lord of the sign on it, so it changes with the Lagna. Wherever that lord stands, it links the 2nd house's matters to that house. The birth report reads it so:
In the 1st. The lord of the 2nd house placed in the 1st links wealth, family and speech with self and body — it brings wealth and family matters to the forefront of your personality and earning power.
In the 2nd. The lord of the 2nd house placed in the 2nd (its own house) links wealth, family and speech strongly here — it strengthens wealth, family support and persuasive speech.
In the 3rd. The lord of the 2nd house placed in the 3rd links wealth, family and speech with courage, siblings and communication — it builds wealth through effort, communication, writing or trade.
In the 4th. The lord of the 2nd house placed in the 4th links wealth, family and speech with home, mother and comfort — it accumulates wealth through property, vehicles and domestic comfort.
In the 5th. The lord of the 2nd house placed in the 5th links wealth, family and speech with children, intellect and romance — it grows wealth through intellect, speculation and creative ventures.
In the 6th. The lord of the 2nd house placed in the 6th links wealth, family and speech with health, enemies and service — it can bring debts or rivalry over money, with earnings tied to service and competition.
In the 7th. The lord of the 2nd house placed in the 7th links wealth, family and speech with marriage and partnership — it links wealth to marriage and partnership, with gains through spouse or business.
In the 8th. The lord of the 2nd house placed in the 8th links wealth, family and speech with longevity, transformation and secrets — it brings wealth through inheritance, insurance or hidden sources, with fluctuation.
In the 9th. The lord of the 2nd house placed in the 9th links wealth, family and speech with fortune, dharma and father — it blesses wealth through fortune, dharma and the father.
In the 10th. The lord of the 2nd house placed in the 10th links wealth, family and speech with career and status — it builds wealth and family standing through a successful career.
In the 11th. The lord of the 2nd house placed in the 11th links wealth, family and speech with gains and friends — it is excellent for wealth — strong, steady gains and fulfilment of financial desires.
In the 12th. The lord of the 2nd house placed in the 12th links wealth, family and speech with loss, expense, foreign lands and moksha — it inclines towards expenses, foreign earnings or savings drained, urging financial care.
