Understanding Vedic remedies

Upaya — working with a chart, not against it

Upaya, usually translated as remedy, is the practical branch of Jyotish. The premise is not that a difficult placement can be deleted, but that its expression can be moderated — by strengthening a weak graha, by moderating an overbearing one, or by directing its energy somewhere useful. Classical texts describe several categories, and they are not interchangeable.

Mantra

Repetition of a sound associated with a graha is the most widely prescribed remedy, and the most accessible: it costs nothing and carries no risk. Each planet has a bija (seed) mantra and a longer Vedic form.

Counts are traditionally specified — often a number proportional to the planet's dasha years — and recitation is usually assigned to that planet's weekday.

Gemstones — the one to be careful with

A ratna is said to amplify the graha it belongs to. That is precisely why it is the remedy most easily misapplied: strengthening a planet that is already causing difficulty in your chart can intensify the problem rather than relieve it.

Blue Sapphire for Saturn is the classic caution — traditionally trialled before being worn permanently. Gemstones should be selected against your full chart, never from a sign-to-stone table.

Daan — charitable giving

Each graha is associated with particular substances, and giving those away is held to moderate its harsher effects. Black sesame and iron for Saturn; wheat and jaggery for the Sun; rice and milk for the Moon. Giving is typically done on the planet's weekday, and traditionally without display.

Vrata — fasting

Observing a fast on a planet's weekday is a common prescription — Monday for the Moon, Tuesday for Mars, Saturday for Saturn. The form varies by region and by capacity, and no fast should be undertaken against medical advice.

Which planet is the remedy actually for?

The most common error is treating a symptom rather than its source. A difficulty attributed to the 7th house is not necessarily remedied by acting on the 7th lord; it may point to the dasha currently running, or to a planet aspecting the house. This is why a remedy list generated from a chart is a starting point for a conversation, not a prescription.

What remedies are not

Upaya are cultural and spiritual practices. They are not medical treatments, and no therapeutic claim is made for them. They should never replace medical, legal or financial advice, and any practitioner who guarantees a specific outcome in exchange for an expensive remedy should be treated with scepticism.

The nine grahas and their traditional associations

These are the classical correspondences used throughout the reports on this site. A remedy is selected from the graha needing support in your particular chart — not from your sign.

Graha Weekday Gemstone Traditional donation
Sun (Surya) Sunday Ruby Wheat, jaggery
Moon (Chandra) Monday Pearl Rice, milk
Mars (Mangal) Tuesday Red Coral Red lentils
Mercury (Budha) Wednesday Emerald Green gram
Jupiter (Guru) Thursday Yellow Sapphire Turmeric, gram dal
Venus (Shukra) Friday Diamond White cloth, sugar
Saturn (Shani) Saturday Blue Sapphire Black sesame, mustard oil
Rahu Saturday Hessonite Black gram, blue cloth
Ketu Tuesday Cat's Eye Multi-coloured items

Common questions

Should I wear the gemstone for my zodiac sign?
Not on that basis alone. A gemstone strengthens its graha, so it should be chosen for a planet that needs support in your chart. Sign-to-stone tables ignore the chart entirely, and strengthening an already troublesome planet can make matters worse.
How long before a remedy has an effect?
Tradition frames remedies as sustained practice rather than immediate intervention, often measured over a dasha or antardasha. No timeframe is guaranteed, and no reputable practitioner will promise one.
Are mantras safe to begin without an astrologer?
Mantra and charitable giving are the two categories generally considered safe to take up unsupervised — they are inexpensive and carry no risk. Gemstones and prolonged fasting are the ones that warrant advice first.
Do remedies replace medical treatment?
No. They are cultural and spiritual practices with no therapeutic claim attached. Never delay or discontinue medical care because of a remedy, and consult a doctor before undertaking any fast.
Why does my report recommend a different stone from another site?
Most sites map the zodiac sign to a Western birthstone. Reports here derive the gemstone from the ruling planet of your Moon sign, following the classical graha correspondences shown in the table above.
